Cockerill tied for the lead on DP World Tour in Spain – Golf Canada SCOREGolf

Manitoba’s Aaron Cockerill is in position to win his first event on the circuit formerly known as the European Tour after a third-round 62 at the ISPS Handa Championship in Spain.

Cockerill sits tied atop the DP World Tour tournament’s leaderboard with Spain’s Adrian Otaegui and Hennie du Plessis of South Africa.

The Canadian squeezed his Saturday score in between two lengthy weather delays. He does not have full DP World Tour status this year after finishing outside the magic mark on the combined 2020-21 points list. However, Cockerill has played five events this season, made four cuts, and snagged a career-best runner-up finish in March in Kenya. He is essentially playing his way back onto the tour, sitting 44th on the DP World Tour Ranking before play in Spain began.

“It was an awesome day, I played really well the whole day,” he said in a story on the DP World Tour’s website.

“The last is a gettable hole, coming in with the wind so you’ve got a long iron and I was able to stay aggressive and keep it a little left of the hole there. The putt just hung on and it was that kind of day, and it was a nice finish.

“I was just chilling out, just trying to stay awake during the delays, I think I almost fell asleep in the locker room and a lot of guys were doing the same thing.

“I like this course. I got through the Qualifying School here in 2019 so I have good memories here.

“I feel like I played well the first two days, I didn’t get as much out of the score as I could have and things came together today.”

Cockerill will play in the final group Sunday at 2:10 p.m. local time, 8:10 a.m. ET.
